Undrafted rookie free agent tackle Renardo Foster out of Louisville has been sent to the IR after suffering ACL damage in Atlanta’s 22-16 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, while starting QB (for two quarters) Byron Leftwich’s return to the field is uncertain after suffering a high ankle sprain in the same contest.
Foster (6-7, 338 pounds) was anointed the starter after veteran Wayne Gandy went down with an ACL injury versus the New York Giants.
It’s about time the Falcons draft a decent trainer too. I’m pinning this one on you Rich!!
The team is already thin at offensive line, starting an UDFA, but since McKay refused to draft or sign any offensive linemen, this is the mess the franchise has been left to do with.
Atlanta’s O-line has given up the second most sacks this season (25) and Leftwich was a victim of the turnstile play of the group.
A five-year veteran out of Marshall, Leftwich was signed by the Falcons a little over a month ago and took over the starting job for Joey Harrington following the Monday Night Football blowout. With a history of injuries on his resume, “Lunchbox” was destined to go down but after two quarters? Seriously?
There is no timetable for his return, but Bobby Petrino has termed the injury as “serious”. Leftwich gets an extra week to heal heading into the bye week, but if he is not ready to go versus the 49ers on Nov. 4, Harrington will continue his quest to hit the most check down routes in a single season.
Again, I can’t help but feel bad for Petrino. He came here to coach Michael Vick, but he was too busy winning purses with “Jane” and threw away his entire NFL career. Then he is stuck with the weak armed, yet very articulate Joey Harrington. After months of begging for someone that can air it out further than 10 yards, Byron comes to town. Two quarters later, back to the ivory tickler.
Don’t worry Bobby P., if you don’t get offered one of the many college vacancies this offseason and skip out on us like you did Louisville, your replacement has screwed up bad enough that the Falcons may be able to take Darren McFadden with the first pick and get Brian Brohm in the second.

Somewhere, Osi Umenyiora is smiling. Here in Atlanta, the Falcon nation is wondering exactly what we did to deserve this.
Starting left tackle Wayne Gandy is due to miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL. This could not have come at a worse time with the Falcons scheduled to take on the Osi Umenyiora and the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
For anyone that missed the Giants’ Sunday night game versus the Philadelphia Eagles, here is a small rundown. Do to a lack of a running game and a first-year starter at left tackle, the Giants picked up a league-tying record of 12 sacks. Umenyiora had six sacks going up against second-year player Winston Justice, who was a second-round pick for the Eagles in 2006.
Guess what? This week, Umenyiora will be taking on undrafted free agent Renardo Foster. Max protect on the left side of the line would be a great idea from start to finish in this one or Joey Harrington, Lunchbox Leftwich and that insurance salesman won’t make it through the game.
Petrino is regarded as an offensive guru, even though his offense has failed to score a touchdown in two contests this season. Hope these guys have been in the film room all week.

This gets better, right tackle Todd Weiner will also be out this week and third-year journeyman Tyson Clabo will get the start. That side of the Giants’ D-line is occupied by one Mr. Michael Strahan.
I really hope PETA will be at this one to step in and stop the abuse of falcons. Also, Blank may need to get his PR team ready. If the Giants do a number on the team and they fall to 1-5, someone has got some explaining to do.
And Michael Vick being gone is not an excuse.

Falcons defense end John Abraham is not listed on this week’s injury report. What a relief. It was almost definite after a two sack performance versus the Panthers that Abraham pulled, aggravated, tore or ruptured something. That is not the case.
Now to the injury report.
Defensive tackles Rod Coleman and Jonathan Babineaux, tight end Dewayne Blakely, safety Chris Crocker and offensive tackle Todd Weiner did not participate in practice.
Coleman is definitely out and has yet to play a down this season, but Babineaux has risen to the occasion and played exceptionally well in his absence. Babineaux has seven tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble this season. He better get healthy because it will be scary if Montavious Stanley gets the start.
Blakely missed action last week and rookie Martrez Milner stepped in to backup Crumpler.
Crocker made his season debut versus Carolina and looked good doing it. Five tackles and one sack. Crocker has won his starting job back pretty quick or maybe he never lost it. Nonetheless, it was nice to see Crocker back on the field and push Jimmy Williams before he gets too comfortable.
Cornerbacks Deangelo Hall and Lewis Sanders had limited participation in practice. Both should be ready to go on Sunday, but if Sanders can not Chris Houston will add on to his 25 snaps from last week. Hall is also facing a possible first-quarter suspension.
For the Texans, wide receivers Jacoby Jones and Andre Johnson missed practice. Running back Ahman Green also missed. The only guy that should matter to the Falcons is Andre Johnson. Jones is pretty good, but Johnson is a big physical receiver and we all know what those types do to D. Hall.
The injury report will be updated on Friday and the official inactives will be announced on Sunday morning.

John Abraham, who missed eight games last season due to a hamstring injury, is having a little trouble with the same issue. The three-time pro-bowler saw limited action in Thursday’s practice and was out today. He is probable for Sunday’s contest versus the Carolina Panthers, but how much will this injury affect his play on the field?
Sunday will be the indicator.
In other injury news, TE Dwayne Blakely and defensive tackle Rod Coleman are both out this week. Blakely’s absence opens the way for rookie and former UGA standout Martrez Milner to see the field. Starting tight end Alge Crumpler still is not 100 percent and the team does use two TE sets from time-to-time.
Third-year man Jonathan Babineaux will continue to start in place of Coleman and is coming off probably his best game as a Falcon, picking up two sacks and three tackles.

Tackle Wayne Gandy is questionable this week and that is perfectly OK because he is only expediting the grooming of Renardo Foster. Gandy is a revolving door at left tackle and he is old enough to remember the leather helmet days. Time for some new blood.
WR Laurent Robinson is probable for this game and the Falcons need to get this kid on the field. Rich McKay would be wise to hire a hamstingologist to help the rookie and Abraham with their reoccurring injuries.
Safety Chris Crocker will more than likely make his season debut and it could not have come at a better time. Carolina is going to use plenty of play action and multiple receiver sets. The Falcons are going to need all the help in the secondary they can get. This will also push Jimmy Williams, who was given the starting job due to Crocker’s injury.

For the Panthers, LB Adam Seward is doubtful and that is all to report.
First division game for both teams, Atlanta needs a win in the worst way and in front of the home crowd is the best way to get it done.

It’s Wednesday and that means the initial injury report is made available (and the NFL frowns upon gambling?, give me a break). The format has changed a bit this season and now instead of the standard “doubtful”, “questionable” and “probable” labels being used throughout the week, it will only be reported starting on Friday. Wednesday and Thursday reports will indicate the injury and the player’s amount of participation in practice. This way, Bill Belicheck loses another of his cheap tactics.
For the Falcons, safety Chris Crocker and defensive tackle missed practice while wide receiver Laurent Robinson saw limited action.
Crocker missed the season opener due to a bone bruise to his knee and continues to nurse the injury. Crocker and Jimmy Williams battled for the spot all offseason and now J. Will has the spot by default.
Williams didn’t do too bad in his first start, but that is because the secondary was not tested. He was solid in run support as usual.
Coleman is out after having surgery a week ago. He won’t be around for a while, but the front line could damn sure use him right about now.

Robinson continues to battle a nagging hamstring injury that caused him to miss the last two preseason contests. Nonetheless, the former Illinois State star looked good in his NFL debut snagging three balls for 38 yards and he has drawn the praise of BP already.
“I thought he played very well. He was not intimidated out there because he was blocking hard and he caught a few passes. His speed definitely showed out on the field.”
As I have been saying since Robinson was drafted… this kid is going to be a stud. With Roddy White dropping everything coming his way and Michael Jenkins getting work on special teams, Robinson could find himself in the starting lineup pretty soon.
For the Jaguars, K Josh Scobee and C Brad Meester did not participate while LB Clint Ingram, DT Tony McDaniel and S Gerald Sensabaugh were limited.
